DHR Faqs

Where are you located?
We are in the process of moving to Byhalia, MS

Why can't I find your physical address?
DHR works with law enforcement and unfortunately have situations where we have to seize horses. In order to protect our horses and volunteers, we do not publish our physical address.

Why is the horse in your logo white when the name is Dark Horse Rescue?
At DHR, we believe every horse deserves a chance. All too often, horses enter our program with a dark past; however we make it possible for them to have a bright future.

What areas do you service?
DHR mostly services DeSoto, Tate & Marshall Counties in North Mississippi. We also service Shelby and Fayette County in West Tennessee. DHR has been known to go outside of these areas to assist law enforcement when needed, but prefer to stay within our limits so as not to get too overloaded.

How do I report neglect?
The best way to report neglect is to contact your local sheriff's department. We work closely with law enforcement in North MS and they are aware of how to get in touch with us if needed.

How do I know you are a legit organization?
You can visit the IRS website at irs.gov to confirm 501(c)(3) status.

How are donated funds used?
As a 100% volunteer organization, funds are utilized toward the care of horses including, but not limited to: food, medical care, training, facility maintenance, and additional supplies needed for organizational growth.

How can I donate to DHR?
You can make financial contributions via our website, Facebook page or by mailing a check payable to Dark Horse Rescue at:

P.O. Box 781
Hernando, MS 38632

Supply donations can be mailed to the above address or you may contact us at info@darkhorserescue.org or 662.469.9139 to schedule a pick-up or drop-off.

Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes. As a federally recognized 501(c)(3) organization, donations are tax-deductible.

How do I volunteer with DHR?
Volunteer Applications can be obtained via our website on the Volunteer page. Completed applications should be emailed to NJeffers@darkhorserescue.org or can be mailed to our Post Office Box.

Can I schedule a visit to look at the DHR horses?
Due to limited time, ability and resources, DHR does not schedule tours to view the horses at this time unless you have been approved for adoption, are a DHR volunteer or sponsor. DHR holds at least 2 events per year at our facility that are open to the public.

What hours are you open?
DHR does not currently have "set" hours.

How do I adopt a horse?
DHR requires our Adoption Application & Contract be completed by the potential adopter and submitted for review. The Adoption Application & Contract can be found on our website. Once completed, the forms should be sent to info@darkhorserescue.org or to our Post Office Box.

Why do you require a contract & application to adopt?
Our volunteers put a lot of time and care into each horse and we love them as our own. We want the best possible home so seek to personality-match each horse with their new owner in hope of a forever commitment.

How long does it take to review the Adoption Application & Contract once submitted to DHR?
DHR volunteers work hard to get back to everyone in a timely manner. However, like you, most of us are busy with work and family. We like to have a decision made within 7 days of receipt but that also depends on how quickly we are able to make contact with references and schedule a home visit.

Do you adopt out of state?
So far, DHR has only adopted in the states of TN and MS but will not pass up the perfect home for any of our rescue horses.

How can I be informed of upcoming events?
You can follow us on Facebook or sign up for our Quarterly e-Newsletter at facebook.com/darkhorserescue or by visiting our website at darkhorserescue.org

Is DHR affiliated with any other organizations?
DHR is not affiliated with any other horse rescue organizations

How can I purchase DHR shirts and other merchandise?
DHR merchandise can be purchased via our website at darkhorserescue.org

How quickly do you investigate neglect cases?
Cases are often called to our attention by the public and unfortunately, due to limited time and resources, we are unable to respond to any case without a specified amount of time. We do attempt to prioritize and get to them as efficiently as time allows.

Why haven't you responded to my email or phone call?
DHR does not have a paid staff, therefore every response is through volunteer service. Please be patient and we will get to you as quickly as possible. If you feel you have not heard from us in a reasonable time-frame, please kindly send a follow-up email or phone call.

Is it better to email or call if I have a question?
A telephone call requires more time than an email, therefore we are able to respond to emails more efficiently than phone calls.

Do you take donated bags of feed?
We do accept donated bags of feed if they are sealed and within the expiration date.
